With each sip from your water bottle, you introduce more bacteria to it, which can then multiply by the millions within a day.

Dr Primrose Freestone from the University of Leicester warns that using the same water bottle for different kinds of drinks will also stimulate the growth of microbes.

Even when you leave it aside, the bacteria will still grow over time if there’s water in the bottle.

Although most microbes aren’t harmful to humans, some can cause infections or trigger symptoms. For example, mould found in water bottles can lead to respiratory problems, especially with people who have allergies.

So, how can we take care of our water bottles?

Experts suggest that we should clean our bottles several times a week if we use them regularly.

For the best result, use hot water and washing-up liquid when cleaning your bottle. Then, use a brush to clean the inside of the bottle, and leave it for ten minutes before rinsing it with hot water again. Lastly, allow the bottle to air-dry instead of wiping away the water residue.

要達到最佳的清洗效果，應使用熱水和洗潔精清洗水瓶。先用刷子清潔瓶子內部，接著靜置十分鐘，然後再用熱水沖凈。最後，讓水瓶自然晾幹而不是擦幹殘留的積水。

And remember, if your water bottle starts to smell bad even after washing, it might be a good idea to switch it for a new one.
