What is a World Heritage Site?
What do these places have in common?
The Great Wall of China, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the Taj Mahal in India.
They’re some of the most famous places in the world – and they’re all on the World Heritage List.
But what does that mean? It’s a label given to landmarks or areas of cultural, historical or scientific significance.
More than one thousand sites are registered around the world.
They’re protected by the World Heritage Convention, which more than 160 countries have signed up to.
Italy has more protected sites than any other country. The list is looked after by Unesco, which is part of the United Nations.
So, how does a place get listed? Well, it has to meet one of ten key criteria – such as representing “a masterpiece of human creative genius” or containing “natural phenomena”.
Then it’s a three-step process. First, it is nominated by the country in which it’s located. Next, experts examine whether it should be included or not. And finally, it’s voted on by a Unesco committee.
More sites are added every year. So, which would you visit first?
