How safe is volcano tourism?
From Iceland to Japan, Hawaii to Guatemala, millions of tourists visit active volcanos every year, and it’s not without risks.
More than 1,200 people, including residents and tourists, were killed in volcanic eruptions between 2010 and 2020.
In 2019, 22 tourists died and 25 were injured when New Zealand’s Whakaari White Island volcano erupted.
But despite this, experts say visiting active volcanoes, for the most part, is safe.
Scientists monitoring volcanic activity can often make short-term predictions when explosive eruptions could occur, giving a few days’ or just hours’ warning.
And many local authorities have systems in place to alert visitors in almost real time.
But every volcano is different.
Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji is active, but it last erupted more than 300 years ago, whereas Guatemala’s Fuego volcano can sometimes erupt up to 12 times an hour.
Most tourism boards offer guidance on how to visit volcanoes safely. So, if you’re looking for a volcanic thrill, do your research.
