This giant iceberg, called A23a, is on a collision course with the remote Antarctic island of South Georgia, a British territory.

“You get something the size of [A23a], when it comes along and it deposits these thousands of tonnes of ice, they just kind of hang around the island, and it does make things a lot more tricky.”

A23a is around 3,500 sq km, almost as big as the Spanish island of Mallorca. Its cliffs reach a height of 400m.

Ice chunks from this iceberg can block feeding grounds, starving baby seals and penguins to death.

If we do nothing to slow the pace of climate change now, increasing ocean temperatures will eventually lead to more vast pieces of the ice sheet breaking off into the ocean, putting more animal lives at risk.
