And I’m Beth. Happy New Year, Feifei! In this programme, we have an expression that means ‘have something good to offer in a situation’, and it is ‘bring something to the party’.
Feifei
Bring something to the party. 這個表達的字面意思是 “帶某樣東西參加聚會”,但它實際所表達的意思是 “擁有對某個情況或局面有益的特質,比如技能、經驗、資金”。
Beth
That’s right. We don’t usually use it literally. For example, you are a great presenter, a talented writer, you have a PhD and you bring amazing food to work. You bring a lot to the party, Feifei.

你過獎瞭!表達 “bring something to the party” 當中的 “bring something” 的實際意思是 “提供某樣東西,能做點什麼貢獻”,而 “the party” 則用來比喻 “某個情況或局面”。Beth 剛剛誇瞭我一通,說 “I bring a lot to the party.(我給公司帶來瞭很多價值,做瞭很多貢獻。)”
Beth
Exactly. I think you offer a lot of experience and knowledge to our department. By the way, aren’t we having a big meeting about our 2024 plans later?
Feifei
Yes! I’ve been very busy preparing. I will be bringing lots of expertise to the party.
Beth
As long as you bring creativity to the party too, we’ll have another exciting year of English programmes. Let’s hear some more examples.
Examples
You have the qualifications for the job, but what other skills can you bring to the party?
Her investment will bring a lot to the party. She’s such a big name in business.
I might be young, but I think I bring a lot to the party.

It’s frequently used in discussions and negotiations, so can be used at work, and there’s a slightly more formal version that means the same thing.
Feifei
Yes. “Bring something to the party” 常用於商務談判和工作討論中。這個表達稍正式一點的版本是 “bring something to the table”,它們意思相同,用法也一樣。Beth, you’re coming to the big new year meeting too, aren’t you?
Beth
I am, but you’ll have to wait to see what I’m bringing to the table!
Feifei
Hmm, it sounds interesting. See you next time!
Beth
Bye.
