Hello and welcome to Question and Answer of the Week. I’m Beth.
Tianqi
And I’m Tianqi. 歡迎收聽 AYYBLOG 英語教學的 “你問我答” 節目。And this week, we are answering the following question:
Question
I would like to know the difference between refreshing, revitalising, and rejuvenating.
Beth
Great question. Actually, these words all convey a sense of renewal or restoration but they are used in distinct contexts. If we break these words down, they all start with the prefix ‘re-‘ which means ‘again’.
Tianqi
“Refreshing”、“revitalising” 和 “rejuvenating” 都是與 “恢復、煥發活力” 有關的形容詞,但它們分別有著不同的使用場景和側重點。本期節目,我們會講解這三個詞的差別和主要用法。
辦公室裡面太熱瞭!I could really do with a cold drink.
Beth
And me. So, actually…I have something for you – a nice refreshing lemonade – here you go.
Tianqi
Thank you!
Beth
Cheers!

Beth
In fact, ‘refreshing’ is the first word we’re going to look at. It describes something that will make you less hot and tired, like a drink. ‘Re-‘ means ‘again’, so it means ‘fresh again’.
Tianqi
我們可以用 “refreshing” 來描述 “讓人感到清爽、減少疲倦的東西”,就像我的這杯飲料;它可以形容 “某物帶給人精神上的振奮或者是身體上的清爽感”。下面請聽兩個例句。
Examples
After lying in the sun for half an hour, she had a refreshing swim to cool down.
(在陽光下躺瞭半個小時後,她遊瞭場泳來消暑降溫。)
That breeze is so refreshing. It’s been way too hot recently.
(那微風真是令人心曠神怡。最近的天氣簡直太熱瞭。)
Beth
Now, ‘refreshing’ can also be used to describe a change – something that is different in a positive and interesting way.
Tianqi
是的,“refreshing” 還可以被用來形容 “一種讓人耳目一新的變化”。比方說:“My sister has just had a baby, and we haven’t had a baby in the family for 25 years! It’s a lovely, refreshing change to the family dynamic.”
Beth
Cute! Well, recently our local park had a community barbecue. Normally, we don’t really talk to our neighbours, so it was refreshing to meet them properly.
Tianqi
下面,我們一起來看 “revitalising” 這個單詞。
Beth
Well, ‘revitalising’ as an adjective can mean give new life or energy to something. I use a revitalising shower gel to wake me up in the morning, and it smells of peppermint.
Tianqi
“Revitalising” 作形容詞時,可以被用來形容 “能帶來新生,使恢復元氣或生機的事物”。
Beth
We can also use it to describe funding that gives somewhere new success. An investment could be revitalising for a city. Or imagine a new shopping centre is built and that brings new energy and positivity to the city and its people.
Tianqi
“Revitalising” 還可以被用來形容 “為某個地區或項目帶來成功或活力的事物”。下面請聽兩個例句。
Examples
A tax increase might be revitalising for the economy.
(稅收增加可能會為該地經濟註入新的活力。)
A new research project might be revitalising to an area of study.
(一項新的研究項目可能會為一個研究領域註入新的活力。)
Beth
Now, let’s talk about ‘rejuvenating’. Like ‘revitalising’, it can have a sense of giving life or energy to something. But something ‘rejuvenating’ can completely transform something, so using this adjective tends to show a bigger impact than ‘revitalising’.
Tianqi
和 “revitalising” 相比,“rejuvenating” 被用來形容能 “帶來根本性改變的東西”。因此,當我們使用這個詞時,往往描述的是可以產生更大影響或效果的事物。
Beth
That’s right. I tend to kill any houseplants I have, but I’ve downloaded an app that tells me when to water them. Now they’re rejuvenating, rather than dying plants.
Tianqi
除此之外,“rejuvenating” 還可以使用在通過改變方法、調整人員或實施新理念而使事物高效運轉的場景中。下面請聽兩個例句。
Examples
You could do a course that is rejuvenating for your career.
(你可以參加一個能為你的職業生涯 “賦能” 的課程。)
You can choose a rejuvenating colour to paint your boring grey bathroom.
(你可以選擇一個明快的顏色來粉刷你單調的灰色浴室。)
Beth
Great, let’s summarise.
Tianqi
總結一下:“refreshing” 形容 “讓你感到涼爽、不再疲憊的事物或讓人耳目一新的感覺”;而 “revitalising” 形容的是 “能夠使恢復元氣或活力的事物”,比如一項投資,可以為當地經濟帶來新的活力;“rejuvenating” 的意思和 “revitalising” 很相近,但形容的是 “可以帶來更深層次或徹底性改變的事物”。
