And I’m Phil. We have a question from one of our listeners.

Dear AYYBLOG 英語教學, I would like to differentiate the nuance between ‘marvel’, ‘wonder’ and ‘miracle’. Thank you.
Buli
這位聽眾想知道三個與 “奇觀;奇跡” 這個意思有關的單詞 “marvel”、“wonder” 和 “miracle” 之間有哪些區別。首先需要註意的是,這三個單詞雖然都可以作名詞,但它們分別還具有其他詞性的含義。
Phil
Yes, so these are all words that can be used to talk about things that are surprising, incredible, and amazing. Let’s start by looking at the nouns ‘miracle’, ‘marvel’ and ‘wonder’.
Buli
“Miracle” 和 “wonder” 都可以指 “令人吃驚的、不可思議的東西”。同時,這兩個詞還可以用於描述假設中的事物。來聽一組例句。
Examples
So many other people applied for that job that it was a miracle that I got it!
(那麼多人申請瞭這份工作,我能得到它實在是個奇跡!)
After that terrible first half performance, it was a wonder they didn’t lose the game.
(在上半場出現如此糟糕的表現之後,這支隊伍沒有輸掉比賽真是不可思議。)
Buli
和上面的例句中 “miracle” 和 “wonder” 所表達出的 “某件事令人難以想象” 的意思相比,“wonder” 和 “marvel” 在作名詞時,還可以指 “驚人的、令人印象深刻的事物”,常常帶有褒義並可以替換使用。來聽一組例句。
Examples
The new transport system in the city is a real marvel. It makes it so much easier to get around.
(這個城市的新交通系統真是太驚人瞭。它讓出行變得特別方便。)
This collection of poems is an absolute wonder. The way the writer uses language is breathtaking.
(這本詩集實在是一部傑作。作者運用語言的手法令人贊嘆。)
Phil
There’s not really a difference in meaning between these uses of ‘wonder’ and ‘marvel’. What is different is that ‘wonder’, as a noun, can also refer to the feeling that you have when you see something surprising or incredible. Let’s listen to two examples.
Examples
I can’t even describe the wonder I felt when I saw the enormous waterfalls.
(我甚至難以描述我看到那巨大的瀑佈時內心的驚奇。)
There’s a wonder that you feel when you walk into ancient buildings like these.
(當你步入像這樣的古老建築時,你會感受到震撼。)
Buli
在上面的例子中,“wonder” 都被用來描述 “某人見到某種驚人的、令人印象深刻的事物時感到的驚奇和驚訝”,這是 “marvel” 一詞所不具有的意思。
Phil
Now, let’s look at ‘wonder’ and ‘marvel’ as verbs. They can have a similar meaning – to feel surprise and amazement at something. Listen to these examples.
Examples
She just stood and marvelled at the beautiful scenery.
(她就站在那,驚嘆於眼前的美景。)
I sat and wondered at the clear sky full of stars.
(我坐下來,好奇地望著著澄澈的星空。)
Buli
在上面的例子中,“wonder” 和 “marvel” 都用作動詞,意思是 “對某事感到驚奇和驚訝”。在表達這個意思時,我們通常用這兩個詞搭配介詞 “at”,組成固定搭配 “wonder at something” 或 “marvel at something”。需要註意的是,“wonder” 作動詞時還有另一個意思:“好奇地思考或琢磨”。來聽一組例句。
Examples
I’ve been wondering whether I should start looking for a new job.
(我琢磨著我是不是該找份新工作瞭。)
I wonder what the best way to learn English is.
(我想知道學英語最好的方法是什麼。)
Phil
Another way that we can use ‘wonder’ is as an adjective. It’s a bit informal, and we use it to say that something is an incredibly effective example of something, especially when we’re trying to exaggerate a little bit. Listen to these examples.
Examples
This new medicine claims to be a wonder cure, but scientists are not so sure.
(據稱這種新藥療效神奇,但科學傢們對此有所懷疑。)
Our new product really is a wonder tool. It can make any job easier!
(我們的新產品實在是一個非凡的工具。它能讓任何工作都變得更加輕松!)
Buli
在上面的例句中,“wonder” 都作形容詞使用,意思是 “神奇的,非凡的”,用於形容 “某物在某類東西中表現或效果異常突出和明顯,通常帶有誇張的意味”。說到誇張,“miracle” 這個詞也可以作形容詞使用,用法和 “wonder” 是類似的,意思是 “某物在某方面的作用或效果非常好、不可思議”,通常用於藥品或產品的廣告中。來聽一組例句。
Examples
Scientists claim that this new medicine is a miracle cure for many diseases.
(科學傢宣稱這種新藥對許多疾病來說都是一劑靈丹妙藥。)
We think our method could be the miracle solution to your problems.
(我認為我們的辦法能為你的問題帶來奇跡般的解決方案。)
