內容簡介
“高昂的價格” 可以用 “an expensive price” 來表達嗎?其實不然:“price(價格)” 通常不和 “expensive(價格高的)” 連用。不過,我們依然可以用 “high(高的)” 或 “steep(過高的)” 等形容詞來修飾 “price”。“價格昂貴” 還可以怎麼說?聽節目,學習 “價格昂貴” 的正確表述方式。

Hello and welcome to Question and Answer of the Week. I’m Beth.
Buli
And I’m Buli. 本周我們要來回答下面這個問題。
Question
在當代英語中,“expensive” 和 “price” 是否可以搭配使用?謝謝!
Beth
So, let’s answer this straight away. If you use ‘expensive’ and ‘price’ together, people will know what you mean, but it sounds strange and is non-standard.
Buli
是的。簡單來說,“expensive” 這個形容詞本身的意思就指 “貴的,價格高昂的”,所以一般在英語中不需要再把它和 “price(價格)” 連用來表示 “這個價格很高”。因此,如果我們想用英語說 “一樣東西的價格太高瞭”,直接說 “It’s expensive” 就可以瞭。
Beth
Something a bit longer that would sound a little bit more natural is ‘The price of that is so expensive’, but it’s still not standard and sounds a bit odd.
Buli
Well, we could say that, but why not look at some other useful expressions? 在想要形容一件商品的價格時,不妨試試下面我們將要分享的這些形容詞。
Beth
There are other adjectives we can use with ‘price’ instead of ‘expensive’. For example, ‘high’, ‘steep’ or ‘exorbitant’, which means really high.
Buli
並且這幾個詞通常都既可以作名詞 “price” 的定語,也可以作它的表語。比如,我們可以說 “it’s a high price” 或者 “that price is high”,表達的意思是一樣的。一起來聽兩個例句。
Examples
These jeans are £200. That price is exorbitant. Who would pay that?
(這條牛仔褲賣二百英鎊。這價格太離譜瞭,誰會為這條褲子花這個錢啊?)
£3,000? That’s a high price to pay for such an old car.
(三千英鎊?這價格對這麼一輛舊車來說太高瞭。)
Buli
當然,除瞭這些可以用來修飾 “price” 的形容詞之外,“expensive” 也還是常常會被用來形容 “某物價格高昂”。隻不過在使用時,通常直接用 “expensive” 搭配我們所說的物品即可。
Beth
Yes. So, for example, I would say ‘that car is expensive’ instead of ‘the price of that car is expensive’.
Buli
我們還可以在連續的兩個句子中分別使用 “expensive” 和 “price”,這樣既符合這兩個單詞的習慣用法,也能起到解釋說明或強調的作用。比如,我們可以說 “That car is expensive. The price is too high. 這輛車很貴。它的價格太高瞭。”
Beth
Let’s hear an example.
Example
This house is so expensive. A million pounds! What a crazy price to pay for such a small place.
(這棟房子太貴瞭。要價一百萬英鎊!這麼小的房子賣這麼貴的價格簡直是瘋瞭。)
Beth
There are also adverbs we can use if we want to modify ‘expensive’.
Buli
是的。我們也可以用副詞來修飾 “expensive”,從而進一步強調某個價格的昂貴程度。比如 “immensely expensive(非常昂貴)” 或者 “enormously expensive(極其昂貴,並且暗示金額十分巨大)”。
Beth
And if we think something is far too expensive, we could say it’s ‘ridiculously’ expensive. Let’s hear some examples.
Examples
Going abroad is enormously expensive. Can we really afford that?
(出國可是很貴的,要花一大筆錢,我們能負擔得起嗎?)
£10 for a coffee? That’s ridiculously expensive!
(一杯咖啡賣十英鎊?這簡直貴得離譜!)
Buli
最後讓我們來總結一下。“Expensive” 和 “price” 通常不連用。但我們可以把它們分別用在相鄰的兩個句子中進行強調或補充說明。在談論 “某物的價格高” 時,我們可以用 “high(高的)”、“steep(過高的)” 或 “exorbitant(過分的)” 等形容詞來修飾 “price”,也可以用 “immensely(非常,極其)” 或者 “enormously(極其,並且強調數量龐大)” 等副詞來修飾 “expensive”。
