Thanks for your question. Let’s start by listening to someone talking about renting somewhere in the UK.

Example
I want to rent somewhere in the UK. I’m happy with a house or a flat. I don’t want a studio because I want the living area to be separate from the bedroom. Ideally the bedroom will have an en-suite attached. I’ll have to pay a deposit and then rent every month of course. The landlord will decide how much that all costs. Wish me luck!

Right. I think it’s time to start looking at the language. 在上面這段話中出現瞭不少在英語國傢租房時經常會使用到的單詞，特別是在英國。接下來，我們就以在英國租房為例學習一下它們的含義和用法。比如，“rent（租，租賃）”。

Beth
Yes. This can be a verb – ‘to rent somewhere’ means pay a monthly fee in exchange for a place to live, like a flat, house or studio.

Buli
讓我們再聽一遍例句。

（我想在英國租房。）

Beth
Now, you could rent a house or a flat. A ‘house’ usually has more than one floor and often comes with outdoor space, like a garden. It may be attached to another house next door to it.

Buli
是的。“House” 和 “flat” 分別代表瞭 “房屋” 和 “公寓” 兩種房型。“House” 通常指的是 “不止一層的，並且可能附帶花園等室外空間的房屋”；而 “flat” 通常指的是 “一整棟樓房當中的其中一戶包含廚房、臥室、起居室和衛生間等不同房間的公寓”。有時人們也會把這種公寓稱為 “apartment”，它和 “flat” 的意思是完全一樣的。在英國，人們更常用 “flat” 來表示 “公寓”。

Well, a ‘studio’ has just one space and all the rooms are in that one space, apart from the bathroom. That means your bed is in the same room as your kitchen and living room, for example.

也就是說，“studio（單間公寓）” 雖然也通常具備 “flat（公寓）” 中所有房間的功能，但 “studio” 通常除瞭衛生間以外隻有一個房間，廚房、臥室等房間的功能都被集中在瞭這一個空間內。所以，“studio” 的面積通常也比較小。我們再聽一遍例句。

Example
I don’t want a studio because I want the living area to be separate from the bedroom.
（我不想租單間公寓，因為我想讓日常生活的空間和臥室分隔開。）

Beth
She also said she wants an ‘en-suite’. This is a bathroom that you can only get to through a bedroom, because it is accessed through a door inside the bedroom.

是的。“En-suite” 的意思是 “臥室中附帶的獨立衛生間”。在英國，具有多個臥室的房屋或公寓中通常主臥會包含一個 “en-suite”，並且還會有另一個供客人或日常使用的衛生間。再聽一遍例句。

Ideally the bedroom will have an en-suite attached.

We also heard words related to money. ‘A deposit’ is money you pay before you start living somewhere. If you keep the place you’re renting in good condition, this money will be returned to you at the end of your tenancy – your stay.

Buli
沒錯。除瞭也可以作名詞的 “rent（房租）” 之外，另一個名詞 “deposit” 也和錢有關，它的意思是 “押金，保證金”。如果房子在 “tenancy（租期）” 結束時保持狀態良好，那麼 “landlord（房東，房主）” 就需要退還租房時繳納的 “deposit”。來聽剛才的例句。
