由於 “狼 wolves” 這種動物在享用獵物的時候速度快，所以表達 “wolf down” 就用來形容人吃飯速度快，吃得也多，也就是漢語裡常說的 “狼吞虎咽”。除瞭 “wolf down” 以外，還可以說 “wolf down the meal” 或 “wolf the meal down”， 意思相同。
