Welcome back to AYYBLOG Learning English where today we are going to look at ‘both’, ‘either’ and ‘neither’.
In all three cases, we are talking about two things.
We use ‘both’ to talk about 2/2 things. So for example, ‘Both tea and coffee contain caffeine.’
Tea contains caffeine, and coffee contains caffeine.
We use ‘neither’ to talk about 0/2 things. So for example, ‘Neither coffee nor tea contain alcohol.’
Coffee doesn’t contain alcohol, and tea doesn’t contain alcohol.
We use ‘either’ to talk about 1/2 things. So ‘In the morning, I drink either tea or coffee.’
Not both, just one.

All three words are used to talk about two things.
這三個詞都用來談論 “兩者、兩件事情”。
Both means two of two things.
限定詞 “both” 的意思是 “二者都……”。
- Both tea and coffee contain caffeine.
Neither means zero of two things. We use ‘neither… nor…’ to specify what the two things are.
限定詞 “neither” 的意思是 “二者都不”。搭配 “neither… nor…” 用來具體說明這兩者是什麼。
- Neither tea nor coffee contain alcohol.
Either means one of two things. We use ‘either… or…‘ to specify what the two things are.
