Beth
Hello and welcome to Question and Answer of the Week. I’m Beth.
Buli
And I’m Buli. 本期的 “你問我答” 節目中我們要回答下面這個問題。
Question
“我們達成瞭協議” 可以說 “we got a deal” 嗎?還是要用 “we made a deal” 或者 “we reached a deal”?它們之間有什麼區別?謝謝。
Beth
Good question! These are very common phrases, and they have similar meanings.
Buli
讓我們從 “we got a deal” 說起吧。在表達 “達成瞭協議” 的意思時,“we got a deal” 是一個常用的表達。
Beth
Yes. This is an informal and conversational way of saying that an agreement has successfully been secured, and the emphasis is particularly on the result of the process.
Buli
沒錯。“Get a deal” 常用於口語,意思就是 “達成協議”。需要註意的是,這個表達中的 “get” 強調瞭 “成功達成協議” 這個結果。“Get” 這個詞在許多包含它的固定搭配中都用於對 “成功地實現瞭某個結果” 的強調。
Beth
Now, it’s common to use the present perfect with this phrase – ‘we’ve got a deal’ – especially when announcing that a deal has been made, but we can also use it in the past simple. Listen to these examples.
Examples
There were hours of discussion, but we finally got a deal.
(雖然討論持續瞭好幾個小時,但我們最終還是達成瞭協議。)
We’ve got a deal! Isn’t that great news?
(我們達成協議瞭!這真是個好消息吧?)
Buli
我們可以註意到,例句中出現瞭現在完成時 “we’ve got a deal”。英語中常用 “we get a deal” 的現在完成時來向他人宣佈 “我們剛剛成功達成瞭一個協議”。
Beth
Now, we can also say ‘make a deal’, though this has a slightly different focus.
Buli
是的。和 “get a deal” 不同,“make a deal” 強調經過一定的努力或談判終於達成協議,意思是 “完成或簽訂瞭一個協議”。
Beth
So, we can compare ‘get a deal’, which focuses on the result, with ‘make a deal’, which focuses on the process and agreeing the terms of the deal.
Buli
沒錯。並且 “make a deal” 常用於描述 “在相對更加正式的場合中達成的協議”。來聽一組例句。
Examples
We’ve made a deal on how to split the profits from the fundraiser.
(我們完成瞭一個關於如何分配資金募集活動所得的協議。)
The company has now discussed the terms and conditions and made a deal.
(公司探討過各項條款後,目前已經達成瞭協議。)
Buli
這位聽眾的問題中還提到瞭 “reach a deal” 這個用法。Beth,“reach a deal” 和 “get a deal”、“make a deal” 又有哪些區別呢?
Beth
Well, the focus of ‘reach a deal’ tends to be on the moment a mutual agreement is arrived at.
Buli
原來如此。也就是說,“reach a deal” 強調的是 “經過一段時間終於達成瞭協議”,也蘊含著 “經過困難或復雜的過程後最終達成協議” 的意思。
Beth
That’s right. And it’s a bit formal and professional, so it’s commonly heard in business settings, in the news and especially when complex matters have been discussed. For example, we may use them in these ways.
Examples
After hours of negotiating, they reached a deal.
(經過數小時的談判,他們終於達成瞭協議。)
From recent reports, it seems that a deal has been reached.
(近期的報告顯示,一項協議有可能已經被達成瞭。)
Buli
除瞭以上幾個表達外,還有一個單詞 “strike” 也經常和 “deal” 組成類似的表達。“Strike a deal” 在表示 “達成協議” 時和 “make a deal” 類似,也強調 “這個協議是經過努力或談判才最終達成的”,特別是在達成協議的過程中爭執得非常激烈時。
Beth
However, it’s very slightly different to ‘make a deal’ in that ‘strike a deal’ also highlights a sense of achievement or pride.
Buli
是的。因為 “strike a deal” 這個表達在使用中往往帶著 “達成協議的成就感或自豪感”,因此它經常被用於商務活動或新聞報導中。來聽一組例句,註意 “strike” 使用瞭過去式和過去分詞形式 “struck”。
Examples
The two leaders have struck a deal after weeks of discussions.
(經過數周的討論,兩位領導人終於達成瞭協議。)
We can confirm that a deal has been struck. More details to follow.
(我們能夠確認協議已經達成。稍後我們將公佈更多細節。)
Buli
