What is quantum computing?
If you imagine a standard computer like a horse and cart, a quantum computer is more like a sports car – a huge leap forward.
They appear to do similar jobs, but in fact, they are totally different.
Traditional computers store data in bits, which can be 1s or 0s.
They work by creating and storing long strings of many, many bits.
But quantum computing’s ‘qubits’ can effectively be both at once.
This means that more data can be kept in fewer bits.
So if this string on a regular computer represents a cat picture, in a quantum computer it might mean many things at once.
So with fewer qubits you can store much more information.
This means we can process information in a flash.
So it could speed up complex tasks like finding new drug molecules.
But progress in quantum computing is slow.
The unpredictable and highly sensitive nature of qubits means it might be a long time until these machines are commonplace.
It’s unlikely that we’ll use quantum computers for everyday tasks.
But most experts say they will still be life-changing for everyone.
