Despite being once labelled as “climate-wreckers” – Sports Utility Vehicles, or SUVs, now rule the road.

Figures show more than half of new cars sold globally are SUVs. In 2014, it was only one in five.

The vast majority of them run on dirty fuels. They also require more resources for manufacturing, since they are usually heavier and bigger.

That was why smaller, energy efficient and electric vehicles started making inroads – but they couldn’t displace SUVs.

And SUVs have led to oil consumption increasing by half a million barrels a day. There were more than 360 million SUVs worldwide in 2023, resulting in 100 million tonnes of carbon emissions increase from the previous year.
